Repurpose a door into a desk

in , , by Julie Nichols, July 22, 2016
Hi, friends, I hope you're enjoying the summer so far!   The heat is on here in Long Island and I'm loving it!!  I've been going to the beach as well as getting projects done around the house.

This is our den.  I don't often show this room because it was cluttered and disorganized. We had a large computer desk sitting in the spot above. For years I thought about dismantling the desk and replacing it with something sleek.

Our daughter is leaving for college in the fall, and we will be empty nesters.  It's funny when I was pregnant with her 17 years ago, I had the urge to nest, now that she is leaving I have the urge to purge.  I started my purge with the dismantling of the desk. I salvaged some of it and my husband like a flash, had the rest of it out to the curb in no time.  This happened so quick that I forgot to take a picture of the desk.

I did some brainstorming as to what I should use for this project and came up with the idea of using a door.  I mentioned this to my husband and he found this one in our basement.

BEFORE
                                                                 It measures 80" x 28"

It was in rough shape and needed a lot of cleaning.  I took off the hinges and doorknob then used a palm sander to sand off all the dirt and to smooth the surface.

After the door was clean it was time to stain.

I used this wood stain.
It covers really well with just one coat.

Following the directions on the can I applied one coat of stain.  I let it dry and that was it!

AFTER

We placed the door on top of two bookshelves, leaving enough space in-between them so a large comfy chair could fit easily underneath. Now the door is a desk with storage!

We have a small collection of vintage school maps.  I hung one above the desk.
If you look real close at the map you can see Long Island, it is above the words New York.
That's our small space in this beautiful country!

The hole where the doorknob was is used for wire control!!

I added some pretty with hydrangeas, cut from the bush just outside the window.

Where are you on the map?  I would love to know!

  1. I love how you used the doorknob hole for the cords. Very clever. We're behind the lamp, lol.
