Well, here we are into the cooler temperatures and that means it's time to bring some warmth into your home and welcome fall in all its glory! Today I am going to show you how you can style your shelves to give them a rustic warm, cozy look we crave this time of year.  Pinecones, acorns, and pops of orange can bring autumn charm to shelves.  Let's see how I used nature to style my dining room built-ins for fall and how nature can provide a welcoming rustic coziness to your home.

When it comes to styling built-ins my first order of business is to start with a blank canvas.  In our dining room, there is a set of built-ins that flank one side of the fireplace.

Here are my styling tips on how you can add autumn charm to your shelves

1.  Sort through your favorite dishware and organize the pieces by color on top of your dining room table or any table will do.  This will help you to decide on a color palette and what is shelf-worthy. (what will look best) 😊   For my shelves, I decided to keep the color palette neutral with white plates and bowls and to add a sprinkle of color with nature and other objects.

This is one of my favorite vignettes because not only does it feature my market sign it's the perfect example of how you can mix color and rustic fall decor with vintage and modern accents.

2.  Uncluttered is best.  Stack the plates and bowls at various heights and place them in a row.  This adds visual appeal and keeps the shelves organized.

Now that the plates and bowls are in order, it's time to add interest to the shelves.  I call this part adding personality and it is one of my favorite things to do when styling.

3.  Textures are the name of the game when it comes to decorating.  I interspersed textures of wood, glass, and metal on the shelves.  An unexpected burst of orange and red was added with the faux fruit and a splash of blue with a stack of transferware cups.

4. Collect natural elements - You will need to head outdoors for this step.  Or if you're not into the great outdoors you can always take a trip to your local craft store to purchase items like pinecones, autumn faux leaves, and acorns.  I love playing outdoors so I simply went to my backyard to gather up my goods.  I placed acorns in a collection of mason jars, displayed a single pinecone on top of a wood cutting board, and added a bouquet of hydrangeas to a metal bucket.

As you can see my MARKET sign is the focal point and star of the shelves.  If you would like to see how I made it, you can read about that here Shiplap Market Sign

5.  Play around with the objects on your shelves to achieve slightly different looks.
