How To Style A Laid-Back Christmas This Year

in , , by Julie Nichols, December 11, 2021

Hello and thank you for stopping by!  When it comes to decorating my home for Christmas the goal is to always make it feel welcoming and relaxed for the people I love.

On the day I decide to decorate, I sort through the Christmas decorations and create three piles. Trash, donate, and keep. From the keep pile, I'll snap up a few ornaments for the tree, and other items I think will work in the space. The rest stay in the box stored away.

Here you will see how I style a laid-back Christmas this year:

I start by adding fresh and faux winter greenery then I bring in the elements of Christmas such as the lighting and decor. These elements are such an important part of Christmas at my place and I love making it come to life each year.  Come on in I'll show you how it looks all put together.

To style the hearth and mantel, I used faux garland and layered lighting on top through battery-operated lights. The wreath is decorated with pinecones and a casually tied silk beige ribbon.  I placed three Handmade Christmas Trees on the left side of the mantel and on the right side I kept unadorned.  A basket filled with burgundy eucalyptus adds warmth to the unlit firebox.

laid-back; unhurried and relaxed

Look at what you have and think about how you want your home to look and feel.  To achieve this you could make a list to help you to process through, to create a laid-back Christmas for yourself.

An antique wooden bowl filled with pinecones sits on top of the dining table.  In the background, the kitchen is made ready for baking Christmas cookies with flour and sugar stored inside glass canisters. White and gold candlesticks are displayed in a simple mason jar and placed on an open shelf for easy access.

I also like to add fragrance to my space with scented candles and flowers.  A scented candle glows on the countertop and a potted lavender plant is tucked under the cabinet. I placed a paperwhite next to the kitchen sink when it blossoms I can enjoy the scent while baking cookies and cleaning the dishes.

I also love looking at the simple beauty of this fragrant flower.

I like to use picture frames in silver and gold to add just a touch of sparkle and elegance to my laid-back Christmas this year.  The photograph is the original image of Sweet Dreams sold in my online shop.

I have a love for antiques and I like to display them with new pieces to add an extra element of design.  The wood sculpture piece was a consignment shop find, that I purchased and fell in love with many years ago.  It looks like it might have been used in a church at one time. I use it to hold candy.

A simple way to add energy to your space during Christmas and the winter season is to display fresh-cut winter greenery.

I brought in more of the green color from the plants with the accent pillow that is resting on the chair.  The pillow can be found in my online shop HERE.

Rustic candle holders with battery-operated lights sit on the window sill in the kitchen to bring brightness to the occasional cloudy days of winter.

The wreath and the candles bring warmth to the window and make it a welcoming spot to clean dirty dishes.

I have a small collection of vintage art that I pull out of storage from time to time to style my home.  This D'apres E. Munier is one of my favorite pieces.

In case you are wondering where our Christmas tree is this year it is in the living room all decorated and waiting for Christmas.

So when you are ready to decorate your laid-back Christmas remember to look at what you have, decide what you love and don't love, and be bold enough to do what makes you happy and feel at ease for Christmas.
