I'm so glad you are here!  If this is your first time visiting love my simple home, welcome.  For the past 7 weeks, I have been working on a makeover of our living-family room for the One Room Challenge and today I am sharing the finished space.  If you missed any of the past weeks, please feel free to click through!

This is my second Room Makeover in the ORC as a guest participant.  This time around a one-week extension was added.  Before I begin the final reveal of my coastal-inspired space I want to thank Linda from Calling It Home who is the creator of the One Room Challenge!  Thank you, Linda!  Without this challenge, my rooms might never get finished.

These seven weeks have flown by and the days have been filled with expectations, excitement, and some anxiety.  I'm so in love with the final design and very proud to share it with you today!

What started out as a relatively stress-free challenge there was a little fiasco with a leaky window during week five.  We scrambled to fix the window so the room would be finished on time.  I started out exactly 7 weeks ago to makeover our living-family room.  My goal was to turn my neglected living room into a bright and airy coastal space for myself and my family to enjoy.  Here is the room before:

The budget was one of the biggest considerations I had when selecting the pieces for this space and my goal was to design for long-term use.  From my initial design plan, I knew that I wanted the Sofa to be the focal point of the room.  I added special touches with pillows to make the sofa even more of a standout.  The artwork in the room was photographed by me and was the inspiration for this project. The colors in the photographs influenced the other elements in the room.  I hope you'll read on and take a closer look at the completed space.  If you have any questions about any of the items in the room ask away in the comment section and I will be happy to answer!

The biggest transformation to the room is the creamy white paint on the walls. During Week Four I decided to add a project that wasn't in my original design plan. I installed the board and batten on the wall in the tiny vestibule.  This tiny space now has a warm inviting vibe when you step through the front door.  I am thrilled with how this simple DIY made this space come to life!

I framed family photographs that I took at the beach in lightweight wood frames that I made from scraps of wood.

Let's talk about the entryway.  I reupholstered the white bench in a fabric with a lively pattern and added textured pillows to soften the back.  I love how incredible the round mirror looks opposite the bench.  It reflects light into the room and I can see if I'm decent when I leave the house.  I love the texture of the jute area rug and its round shape breaks up the rectangular space.

The photograph in the frame was taken by me and is available to purchase in my PRINT SHOP. This small island is the little oasis that we visit by boat. The colors in the photo were my inspiration for the room design.

My design plan for the room was to create a room that inspires calm, comfort, and relaxation. It also had to be welcoming and utilitarian. It's where I spend time with my family, entertain and feel at peace when alone. I purchased a ginormous sofa because I want to be able to lounge, kick back, and be completely comfortable.  I wanted my sofa to be beautiful and tailored.

I love this gorgeous area rug!  It was love at first sight and I knew it was meant for this space. I hung textured roller shades and faux silk curtains on the windows.  All of the furniture with the exception of the sofa I already had.  The coffee table is an antique, the chair I purchased at a yard sale and I repurposed a china hutch to use as our entertainment center.

A picture hung low on the wall lets the person sitting in the chair enjoy the picture.

Hello friends, it's week 6 of the One Room Challenge!  This week the sofa arrived and I purchased an area rug for the room.  I still have some work to wrap up over the weekend to prepare for the reveal next week.  Accessories need to be picked out, the ART will be installed, and I need to spend time styling and photographing the space.

There have been a few hiccups along the way and I've made some tweaks to my design plan.  I can't wait to show you the space with the sofa, decor, art, and rugs!  Thank you for stopping by and don't forget to visit the other Guest Participants and talented Designers in the ORC.

We are in week 5 of the One Room Challenge.  This week I ran into a serious issue with a leak in one of the windows in the family room. We had a heavy rainstorm and rain leaked through the exterior siding into the window casing causing damage to the freshly painted window and window sill.  After the repairs were complete I focused on fabric choices for the space.

I received notice that my sofa was shipped from Wayfair.com so I am super excited about that!  My fingers are crossed that it arrives on time for the reveal.

There are several fabric choices for this sofa so the best way to pick the fabric was to order samples.

This is the fabric that I picked for my sofa.  It is called Hilo Flax and seems to be the most durable of the fabric choices.

After the outside of the siding was fixed my husband worked on fixing the inside of the window.  Unfortunately, the cost to repair the damage to the siding ate into my decorating budget.  I will not be getting new chairs, I will be using furniture that I already have.  Keeping a positive attitude, I am blessed to have a loving and handy husband that can fix just about anything.

During the repair of the window, I slipped out to a yard sale and found this pretty painting to use in the room.  I plan on using blues and greens in my neutral color family room.

And a little gold

My friend Jen helped me out by providing these gorgeous pillow covers!  I can't decide which ones to use on the new sofa.  Right now my biggest challenge in this space is decorating without the sofa physically in the room.  Even though I am so close to being finished I feel without this key component in the room I am feeling a bit stuck.

So far the walls are painted, I installed wainscoting to our tiny vestibule, ( I can't wait to show you that, it was something I added on a whim to my to-do list),  the shades and curtains are hung and the damage to the window and siding are fixed.  Next, I need to decide on artwork, accessories, lamps and an area rug for the room.

That's it for me with week 5, I am heading over to support the other guest participants in the One Room Challenge.  If you would like to do the same head over to  Calling It Home

It's time for another One Room Challenge update!  This week the mirror and area rug for the entryway were delivered, I hung the shades and curtains and finished a new project that wasn't on my original to-do list.

I also have some news to share from Linda the creator of the ORC.  Linda extended the challenge for an extra week due to the natural disasters (hurricanes and wildfires) that lead up to or occurred during the challenge.  My heart goes out to everyone affected by them.

Shipments and scheduled work have been delayed or canceled altogether for many designers so it makes sense for the extra week.  The new reveal date for the designers will be November 15th  and the new reveal date for the guest participants (me) will be November 16th so mark your calendars.

In case you are stopping by for the first time here is my design plan that I am working on.   If you'd like to catch up from the beginning you can do so here:  Week 1/      Week 2/      Week 3     Now on to week 4........

I decided this week to add wainscoting to our tiny vestibule.  This tiny area is the landing strip for all coats, shoes, hats, and other stuff.  It is also the first area you see upon entering our home. A quick trip to LOWES, a few nails and more paint and I was done. I love the way it turned out and I can't wait to show you in the reveal.

The new roller shades are a game-changer for this room, they add a warm texture and light filtering privacy.  For complete privacy, I hung curtain panels.

The curtains I hung are faux silk curtains that I purchased a few years ago.  I think they are discontinued, but I managed to find a few that are similar.

Have you seen the new modern home line launched from Target called Project 62?  Even though my style isn't sleek and modern, I do love some of the pieces.  I purchased this round wall mirror for the entryway.

Similar Round Wall Mirror

The area rug for the entryway arrived this week and I couldn't be happier!

I ordered the Gracie Oaks Roth Jute Handwoven Rug from Wayfair.  It is a 4' round natural woven rug.  I love the feel of this rug and the simple beauty it brings to the space.  Below is a link to a similar rug.  I am standing on mine in the picture above.
Finding the perfect sofa for a room is no easy task.  A lot of research online, measuring, thinking and re-thinking before I purchased this one by Birch Lane. During my search, I put together a list of affordable sofas that I will be sharing in an upcoming post.  I fell head over heels for this sofa and I can't wait for it to be delivered!

five minute fall leaf swag

October 26, 2017, in ,
'Tis the season for colorful leaves, pumpkin picking, and fireside lounging. I've swapped out my summer wreath for this fall swag that took five minutes to make.  I love a project that only takes a few minutes and this simple swag is one of those.

HOW TO MAKE A FALL LEAF SWAG

You will need four branches of colorful leaves.  They can be real or faux. You can find floral stems and sprays at Amazon.

STEP ONE
Gather the leaves and position them..... one on top of the other

STEP TWO
Use floral wire and twist tightly around the stems

STEP THREE
Tie a ribbon on it and hang your swag

Since this project only took five minutes to make, I had time to display a few pumpkins.  I love the look of pumpkins when they are grouped together, don't you?
It's already week 3 of the One Room Challenge!  I've reached the halfway point and I couldn't be more excited!  Last Week I talked about the Sherwin Williams paint color for the room that I absolutely love!  The paint color is a creamy white.  I think it is the perfect backdrop for the coastal style I am going for in the living - family room.  You can see my design plan for the room HERE.

This week I'm happy to say the walls are painted and I purchased window treatments and an area rug.  I found a simple round jute rug from Wayfair that I think will look pretty with the white walls.

There are three tall windows in our family-living room so dressing the windows can get expensive. My original plan was to purchase bamboo privacy shades but after doing some research I realized they were out of my tiny budget.  I was extremely disappointed that I couldn't buy the shades of my dreams, but I had to move on.  I decided to search Target and Home Depot for roller shades.  I found some affordable ones that are woven and have a privacy backing.  I feel they will be a good alternative to the bamboo shades.

Did I mention I am doing this project solo this time around?   How do you think I'm doing so far?

That's my update for week three.  Don't forget to check in on the progress of the other ORC Guest Participants.

Hi, friends,  it's week two of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda at Calling It Home.  I'm happy to say I got a lot done this past week!  I prepped the walls for painting and picked out the fabric for the new sofa.  If you missed week one you can check it out HERE.

One-Room-Challenge-Week-2-Painting-The-Walls

The first step in getting the room ready for my design plan is to paint the walls. This is the messy part of the challenge and what I think is the hardest.  The paint color I picked is Origami White by Sherwin Williams Paint Company.  I wanted something crisp and fresh, a little creamy but not yellow. This room has three windows and lets in a lot of light, I think it will be the perfect white for my beachy farmhouse living room.

one-room-challenge-week-2-painting-the-walls

I use a binder ring to keep my paint samples handy and organized.  Since I am using white on the walls, I'm going to try to incorporate some of these other colors into the design in fabric, furniture, accessories, and decor.

one-room-challenge-week-2-painting-the-walls

I took everything off the walls and spackled.  Hopefully, if my new sofa arrives on time the sectional will be going.  I need a fabric that is pet-friendly.  We use our small living room to watch television and to entertain family and friends.  This room needs to function as a family room and a living room for when guests come to visit.
 one-room-challenge-week-2-painting-the-walls

I also plan on replacing the white blinds with woven shades. The television will be staying.

There is a small vestibule that enters into the living space.

I use this part of the living room as our entry.

Next week the entire room should be painted.  I can't wait to see this room white and bright.  I know all this mess will be worth it in the end. In a few weeks, I should have a completed space to show you. (hopefully, fingers crossed)

Hello everyone!  It's time for another One Room Challenge.  This time around I will be making over our family room.  It is the room we use the most and is the first room you see when you enter our home.  Let me explain what the One Room Challenge is.  It is a 6-week room makeover challenge.  Throughout the 6 weeks, I will post updates on how my room is coming along.  There will be a ton of inspiration from designers and other bloggers during the course of the challenge.  Here is what I did for the challenge last year:  Guest Bedroom

This makeover isn't nearly as big, but I am super excited to get started.  Below are my plans for the family room.

Here is my to-do list for this challenge:

  • Paint the walls
  • Buy a new sofa
  • Buy new chairs
  • Buy new window treatments
  • Replace the lighting
  • Replace the artwork
  • New accessories
  • New area rug
  • Add a bench to the entry area
  • Add a console table to the entry area
