Do you like a little coastal and a little traditional?  Or are you a little modern, but love a good farmhouse style too?  Hi, friends, I'm super excited to show you some of the updates we've made in our dining room including the Parsons chairs from Wayfair and the farm table that I recently refinished.  We are planning on moving in the near future so I decided to hold off on buying the other items on my mood board and to use what I already have, but that's a whole different story.  So instead let's talk about my new dining room chairs!  I fell in love with them the moment I saw them!  The reason I love them is that they are upholstered (comfy) they're simple and they work with my farm table to help modernize it without being super modern. They also offer a high-end look at an affordable price. The chairs come in three different colors; natural, blue, and charcoal.  I went with natural for a coastal vibe. Oh, and they are a great scale not too clunky or too small. The fabric is a polyester blend and wipes up easily.

To bring the room together I chose this gorgeous indigo area rug from Target. It is the exact one we have in our Living Room. The distressed vintage pattern adds character to the room and makes everything cozy!  The tricky part is knowing how big of a rug you need and how to place it. Here are some guidelines that I use.  Make sure the dining chairs are all on the rug and around the table.  The rug should extend the table by at least 8 inches on each side.  Leave at least one foot of floor space around the perimeter of the room.  Typical sizes in feet are 6x9, 8x10, and 9x12.

The photograph above the fireplace can be purchased here in the My Shop.

The blue faux silk curtain panels are hung on a matte black curtain rod breaking slightly at the floor.  Panels that extend onto the floor by one to three inches are the most stylish right now and are more relaxed than those that graze the floor.  If you have uneven floors or are worried about measuring, this style is more forgiving.

The chandelier is matte black and is the same one featured in the before picture.  Removing the shades lends a modern look. Here is a different chandelier that is simple in style.

Let's take a look at the before.  When we purchased our house years ago it was stuck in the '70s with dark wood, a red brick fireplace, shag carpeting, and orange linoleum in the dining room.  Back then I wasn't a blogger so it never crossed my mind to take pictures. Believe me, it looked far worse than the image below.  After we installed new flooring I made an awful attempt to paint the red brick on the fireplace white.

BEFORE

Fast forward to now......  I painted the entire fireplace white including the built-ins, I sanded the mantel down to the raw wood, and my husband and I installed shiplap on the wall above the fireplace.  Making simple updates like these can completely change the vibe of a room.

The wall paint color is Woodlawn Blue by Benjamin Moore, and the fireplace and built-ins are painted with White Dove by Benjamin Moore.
